Announcements - December 18, 2016


  • We have collected 105 bags of donated clothing this year. Net proceeds will be equally donated to Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and Union Gospel Mission. 
  • The church will sing Christmas carols at the Marine Gateway Mall on December 18 between 2pm and 4pm. Members of WBC who are interested to join singing, please invite friends and relatives to enjoy the singing. 
  • Christmas Charity dinner will be held tonight at 6:00pm. Please arrive on time and bring your own dining ware. The charity event includes: 1) Take pictures with Santa, 2) Auction and 3) Collect donation on the tables. Net proceeds will be equally donated to Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and Union Gospel Mission. 
  • A joint Christmas Baptismal worship service will be held on December 25, 2016 at 11:00am. The sermon will be preached in Chinese, please bring your own radio and ear phone for simultaneous translation. 
  • Annual General Meeting will be held on January 22, 2017. Members are encouraged to attend. The agenda will be announced on January 8, 2016 and 2016 annual report will be uploaded onto the church blog the same day.

Summary of December 2016 Deacon Board Meeting


  • Downstairs redevelopment committee has been reformed as follow: Pastor Gladys, Pastor Anders, Pastor Alan, Deacon Justin, James Lai, Betty Lee, Felix Loo, Jenny Tse, Tommy Tung and Lauren Wong. 
  • The board decided not to hold Children Summer Camp in 2017.  
  • The church will arrange for special cleaning of all the carpeted area after the Christmas dinner.

  • A special Christmas meditation retreat will be held today at the main hall between 2pm -4pm. The topic is “You Will Find A Baby”. 
  • WBC is again hosting a charity clothing drive this year and the collection period will end today. Please leave bags of donated clothing at Room A. Net proceeds will be equally donated to Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and Union Gospel Mission. 
  • Lost and found items in the kitchen will be donated for the clothing drive fundraiser event. Please claim your lost items before December 11.

Summary of November 2016 Deacon Board Meeting


  • Christmas Celebration events: Clothing drive (coordinator: Maggie Leung). Christmas Charity Dinner (coordinator: Deacon Peter Cheung and Tsz-Lam Mak) will be on December 18. Dinner tickets are $15 per adult and $8 per child age 4-10. Net proceeds from all fundraiser events will be donated to Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and Union Gospel Mission evenly. 
  • Due to the complications in acquiring a permit from the City, the church will defer installing a signage at the back of the building. 
  • Hemrich Bros (downstairs’ tenant) had signed a one-year (2017) lease with the church. 
  • A joint worship service will be held on December 25 at 11am. 
  • The annual general meeting will be held on January 22, 2017.

  • AWANA Matching Program needs your support! Every month at AWANA Store, we encourage the clubbers to donate the AWANA Shares they were awarded to a designated charity, in order to nurture in them a caring heart for the world and the people around us. For every Share they donate, we would like to invite donors to match with a $5 donation. If you would like to be a matching donor, please contact Pastor Alan.

    1. take the unfolded boxes on the table at the back of the hall 
    2. take a brochure (there are English & Simplified Chinese brochures for your choice) 
    3. you can also use your own box - suggested is the transparent plastic shoebox so that the child receiving it can re-use it (it can buy from Walmart, London Drug, JYSK etc) 
    4. new this year: 1) do not put candy of any kind in the shoebox; 2) there are 2 sets of 'boy/girl' labels in the English brochure, you may only need one brochure for multiple boxes 
    5.  please bring back the gift-filled shoebox on November 20

Summary of October 2016 Deacon Board Meeting


  • EM will host a Thanksgiving dinner event on October 9, 2016. 
  • Following are the recipients of AWANA matching donation for 2016-2017: AWANA BC, AWANA GO, International China Concern, Operation Christmas Child (for making shoe box gifts), Praise 106.5, BC Children Hospital, Breakfast Club of Canada. Donations receipts will be issued for donating to the above Charities except for making shoe box gifts. 
  • Following are the guidelines of congregational loan to the church: 
    1. The church will only accept loan from an active member; 
    2. The church reserves the right to terminate the loan agreement at any time; 
    3. Members can lend at either 0% interest rate or at a uniform interest rate decided by the church. 
  • CM will host a newcomers’ luncheon on October 30 right after the worship service. 
  • There will be a special business meeting for all members on November 20. Agenda is to be announced. 
  • The Christmas Charity dinner will be held on December 18 at 6pm. Details are to be announced.

  • Please move your car to the upper parking lot after the worship service because we will lock up the downstairs garage door 30 minutes after our gatherings. 
  • Homework hour for grade 7-12 will start on Sept 11, 4:00-6:00pm. For details please check with deacon Justin. Invite your friends to come and try it out for free for the months of September and October.

Summary of September Deacon Board Meeting


  • In order to avoid the tedious procedure in applying license and permit with the government and misunderstanding from the public, the name “Westside Community Centre” will be replaced by “Westside Baptist Church Community Ministries” with immediate effect. 
  • Due to the adjustment in the congregational loan, the church welcome brothers and sisters to take part in lending money to the church with or without interest. For more details, please contact Monica Tong (Treasurer). 
  • There will be an information session about the redevelopment project of the downstairs facility on October 30, 2016 at 1pm. Members are welcome to submit their questions in advance to the pastoral staff. 
  • The church is seeking to renew the lease with Hemrich Bros. for the year of 2017. 
  • Alex and Fion Fung have withdrawn their memberships. Mark Tsui has become an inactive member. Judy Chak, David Chak, Dickson Cheung, Iris Lau, Tracy Lau, Karen Wong have been deactivated for more than 3 years and thus their memberships with Westside will be terminated. 
  • Pastor Alan will be on professional development training and vacation between September 19 -28, 2016. Pastor Gladys and Anders will be on vacation between October 5-19, 2016.

Summary of July 2016 Deacon Board Meeting


  • CitRUs serving roles will have the following changes: First Look directors – Joanna Ng and Doris Lee, 252 Junior director– Grace Ng and Betty Lee, 252basics director – Daisy Liu. 252 Junior will begin in August and the church will purchase children furniture for the new classroom. 
  • There is further amendment on the by-law 6.1.3
    • 6.1.3 Each Pastor shall be an ex-officio, non-voting member with veto power (except in matters pertaining to the pastors themselves) of all Church bodies and committees where appropriate to their job description. 
  • During the summer when there is no AWANA, Friday night’s small group (dLite and Parenting) will take turn to reset chairs in the main hall for the Sunday worship services. 
  • The church will adopt the name “Westside Community Centre” to promote all the community activities. Two new courses will be launched in September are: Career Skills for adults and Drama for career development. 
  • The church has donated the old sound board to one of the CBWC churches.

Summary of June 2016 deacon board meeting


  • AWANA serving roles will have the following changes: Co-Commanders – Carson Lai and Constance Wun; Registrar: Jessie Leung; AWANA store manager: Jackson Yu, AWANA Matching – Constance Wun; T & T director – Jeffrey Yeung; Sparks director – Joseph Ng; Cubbies director – Jessie Leung. 
  • CitRUs serving roles will have the following changes: First Look directors – Joanna Ng and Doris Lee, 252 Junior director– Grace Ng, 252basics director – Daisy Liu. 252 Junior will be formed in August 2016 which is suitable for children in grade 1.
  • Free talks on various topics will be given to mature adults (50 years old plus) every other Friday starting from June 24. 
  • ESL course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September to November. Course fee is $40 per person. 
  • Pastor Gladys and Pastor Anders will attend the BC & Yukon Regional Assembly on June 24 & 25 at White Rock Baptist Church. 
  • The congregation meeting will be held on July 10. The agenda is to be announced. 
  • 2016 alarm contacts have been amended as follow 1) Deacon Peter Cheung, 2) Deacon Godfrey Leung and 3) Deacon Keddy Au Yeung. Please contact the person according to the above order should the alarm is triggered.

  • Worship duties list is posted on the church website. Please contact Deacon Peter, Deacon Justin or the church secretary if you are not available for the duties. Please do not make changes on your own. 
  • Try to use offering envelopes for your tithe and offering. If you have forgotten your offering number, please contact the church office. 
  • For those who are new to Westside and if you have not filled out a guest record form, please get one from our ushers. Also contact Pastor Gladys or one of our SG leaders if you want to know more about us or join our small groups. 
  • We have uploaded all 6 of the prayer walking guides to the church website and encourage you to continue prayer walking in our neighborhood by using these guides. Make it a habit that you do regularly or may encourage your small group to go together, especially when the weather is nice. 
  • In order to understand our community better for planning the upcoming ministries, we have prepared demographic survey to be done in our neighborhood. Please contact Pastor Anders if you are available to do the survey in the neighborhood. 
  • The Children Summer Camp is open for registration now. The event is from July 4 to August 26. Please check the church website and bulletin board for more details. We are planning to re-start

  • The church is going to collect special offering today during worship services. Please make cheque payable to “Westside Baptist Church” and specify on the offering envelope “Fire relief”. All fund received will be sent to CBWC for this cause. Donation receipt will be issued for donation of $20 or above. The church had already donated $1,000 for this cause. 
  • Pastor Gladys is taking her vacation from May 4 to 22. The guest speaker guest speaker for today is Pastor Lawrence Cheung, Chaplain at St. Paul’s Hospital. 
  • In order to understand our community better for planning the upcoming ministries, we have prepared demographic survey to be done in our neighborhood. Please contact Pastor Alan if you are available to do the survey in the neighborhood.

Summary of May 2016 Deacon Board Meeting


  • The church planned to perform a review engagement of the 2016 financial statements in May 2017. The church has hired Gigi Li as the coordinator of the Children Summer Program this year. 
  • Starting from mid-June the church will begin to launch various community activities suitable for different age group. “Running man” is a game suitable for the youth (the coordinators are Joseph Ng and Jason Kwok). Praise dance will be resumed and is suitable for adults of all ages. Informational seminars will be held regularly for mature adults (freewill offering will be collected during the seminars). 
  • The church has contacted three consulting firms about the possibility of downstairs redevelopment. There will be further discussion once we receive their proposals in June. 
  • New Societies Act will come into effect on November 28, 2016. The church will have the two years following November 28, 2016 to “transition to the new Act”.

Hiring Children Summer Program Assistant (Summer contract position)

Westside Baptist Church is hiring TWO 40 hours/week Children Summer Program Assistants. This is a July 4 to August 26, 2016 (8 weeks) contract-based position. Eligible student participants must:
  • be between 15 AND 30 YEARS OF AGE at the start of the employment; 
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; 
  • be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; 
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations; and, 
  • be able to provide a certified criminal record check.
Job Description:
  • Assisting in the operation of 8 weeks of full-day summer programs for children from preschool to grade 3, possibly with ethnic Chinese background.
Required Skills:
  • Language: fluent in spoken and written English and Cantonese; preferably also in Mandarin. 
  • Skills and experiences working with young children. 
  • Good interpersonal skills and willing to work in a team. 
  • Responsible, organized, self-motivated, willing to learn, and attention to detail.

Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund

Westside Baptist Church will collect special offering on May 8 and 15 for immediate emergency relief and assistance in Fort McMurray through Canadian Baptist Ministry and Canadian Baptists of Western Canada.

  • The church anniversary joint worship service will be held on May 1st at 10am to 12:30pm. There will be simultaneous translation of the sermon into English, and a prayer walk will be held during the worship service. A factsheet about prayer walk and the details of the worship on May 1st can be picked up at the back of the hall.
  • Immediately after the Joint Service, we will have a potluck lunch together. There is no need to register for this. Those who want to join please bring some food for sharing. The portion to bring shall be a little bit more than enough to feed yourself or your family for lunch. As usual, please also bring your own utensils. Please note that we have limited reheating facilities (like microwaves or ovens), so if possible please plan to bring food that can be consumed without reheating. During the lunch, we will have a special sharing session about the future vision of Westside.
