*COVID-19 Correspondence 4*

May 30th, 2020 It’s been 2 months since we gathered virtually through zoom. As we have entered the 2nd phase of this pandemic with partial re-opening of some businesses and the partial returning of students to schools, perhaps some of us may wonder, when will we be going back to re-gather at church. For those who are extroverts and who are younger in age, they may be more ready and keen to go back to church. But be mindful that even if we return it will be a new normal. We have discussed among pastoral staffs the different possibilities for the present stage and the days ahead. Will we be able to host everyone if we plan for a third worship service? How many can we sit in the hall with social distancing? Who and how can we do all the sanitation and enforce the hygiene procedures? Will we still have children program at the initial stage? How would we do communion and offering? And many other practical questions?

Making the decision to stop gathering in person was tough back then in March. But it’s not as simple and easy to just say, let’s re-open on a certain date now. A lot of practical issues need to be addressed. We know that COVID is not over and there may always be a threat of a 2nd wave, like what happened in New Brunswick and Korea. As God’s people and responsible citizens, we want to live with Godly wisdom and at the same time be submissive to civil authorities. So with the guideline from our BC government which is still holding onto gathering under 50 people, it is quite impossible for us to re-gather for worship in person until the situation changes. For the sake of unity and other practical issues, we still hold onto this decision for both CM and EM. As for all small groups, the situation will be discussed at the small group leaders gathering this coming Sunday afternoon. If all the criteria of sanitation, social distancing can be met and all small group leaders are willing to take the responsibility, we will bring this up for further discussions at the board on June 7. At this stage, we don’t recommend gathering at people’s home for small groups or praises. This relate to the issue liability and risk management as a church. In the meantime, please pray for all those in leadership for unity and wisdom in the decision making; and to have all the protocols and practical steps set up before we re-gather. Also pray for love, joy, peace, patience, kindness …and all the fruit of the Holy spirit. Continue to meet through zoom. Practice the spiritual disciplines of scripture reading, meditation and prayer while at the same time practice social distancing. Let us learn to cease striving; (Psalm 46:10) be still and put our hope in God (Psalm 131:-2-3).

(Psalm 46:10) “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

(Psalm 131:2-3) But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother;like a weaned child I am content. 3 Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.

*COVID-19 correspondence 3*

It has been a month since we have practiced social distancing and started to worship on line. Church life has never been the same. But this weekend is the first time in our history that everyone has to stay home for Easter. We can’t meditate and take communion together on Good Friday. We hold off baptisms and transfers, and can’t have Easter worship and celebrations together. This is more than upsetting our routines and traditions. It is disruptive to our community life. For many people, not being able to go to church is a big part of loss in their lives. Many have to adjust to worshipping and fellowshipping virtually. And others, especially mature adults and seniors, still need to learn and cope with this new way of socializing. People ask: when can we go back to normal? When can we go back to church? Yes, we can’t go to meet at the church during this time. But be mindful that we are the church. So let us practice our faith and be the church. Let us live out the resurrection power of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us try to care for one another and pray for one another through different technologies. For those who can meet in creative ways through Zoom, let us continue to do so.

I realize that many of us are going through great trials and temptations during this time. As most people are working at home, some parents face the additional burden of homeschooling. Some lost their jobs and face extra financial stress. Some working in the frontlines and essential service face the challenge of health risks. But many of us start to feel the anxieties of the unknown future. In the midst of all this, let us put our hope in God as the anchor for our soul. Let us continue to persevere and grow through this. Let us always draw close to God through His words. Let us continue to be faithful and always uphold one another through prayers.

(Romans 15:13)  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

[ FORSAKEN ] Good Friday Meditation Service

The guidebook for the Good Friday Meditation Service [Forsaken] can be downloaded here. The congregation is encouraged to download it in advance, and reserve 1 to 2 hours on Good Friday April 10 to conduct this meditation service at home.

The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.

Good Friday is the climax of the Lent season, commemorating the crucifixion of Christ. It is a day when we unite ourselves with the death and burial of Christ. It is a day when we experience together with Christ his agony of being forsaken.

We invite you, therefore, to the observance of Good Friday, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word.

AN OPEN LETTER TO CANADIAN BAPTISTS

“FOLLOW THE ARK, FOR WE HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS WAY BEFORE” Joshua 3:4

This is a time of fear and uncertainty, never before experienced within our lifetime. An unprecedented time for most of us, yes, but not for the Church. While for most Canadians this may be our first experience with a pandemic, as the Church, we’ve been through this — and worse — before. God has always led us through. The Lord is faithful to do it again.

When the people of Israel stood on the banks of the Jordan, the future was nothing if not uncertain. But what did God ask of them? Follow the Ark of the Covenant — the symbol of God’s eternal promise — and proceed with confidence. God will go before us.

We leaders of the Canadian Baptist family are standing alongside you, your families, churches and local communities. Like you, our lives and families have been turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainly it brings. You reached out to us for guidance, insight and hope. You asked us how to care for those at risk, both locally and globally. Hard questions about the viability of our churches have been put before us. Know that we hear you and are doing everything possible to support you through this time.

Recently we met (virtually) to share and pray for each other’s churches, pastors, missionaries and organizations. We committed to praying for the whole Canadian Baptist family, and to making ourselves available to offer guidance and direction. Now, we call you to join us in prayer and to continue living generous, hope-filled lives even during this disruptive and difficult time.

This crisis may be the greatest challenge we will ever face as Canadian Baptists, but it may also be our defining moment. How we come together and mobilize as God’s people in the midst of this current crisis may set the course for the future of our denomination. Now is the time to proceed with the shared confidence that comes from knowing God goes before us and his mercies never fail.

Today, we invite you to join us in three acts of faithful discipleship:
  1. Stand united in worship and intercession. Pray fervently for our Canadian Baptist family and all our ministries, including churches, camps, women’s groups, schools, senior’s homes and mission initiatives both local and global. As Canadian Baptists, we affirm his sovereign lordship over all creation and choose to place our total trust in him alone for all the activities we undertake.
  2. Continue to support your church. Many churches will encounter dire consequences without the ongoing financial support of their regular attendees. Find out how to continue giving your tithes and offerings even when church services are suspended.
  3. Care for the most vulnerable. Who are the elderly and recent refugees in your local community? Who are the poor and marginalized in our world who are especially vulnerable during this pandemic? Ask how you can continue to safely minster to those in greatest need.
While the world may have ground to a halt, we need you to be active in praying, giving and caring. None of us have experienced this before, but as his Church, may we continue to live out the Easter hope of Christ’s resurrection and new life.

Shalom,
Sylvia Hagerman | Interim Executive Director, Atlantic Baptist Women
Diane McBeth | Executive Director, Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec
Tim McCoy | Executive Minister, Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec
Rob Ogilvie | Executive Minister, Canadian Baptists of Western Canada

*COVID-19 Correspondence 2*

Dear brothers and sisters at Westside,

As the COVID-19 pandemic escalates, we all face the pressure of fighting the battle. Even though we as pastoral staffs decided unanimously last Sunday afternoon to continue our Worship services, with the announcement of banning public gatherings of more than 50 people, we have no choice but to cancel our Sunday worship services, both CM and EM as of March 22. Perhaps some may still doubt if this is a necessary action for smaller group gathering. As responsible citizens, we do take the advice of the BC government seriously. Hopefully this can help slow down the spread of the disease and prevent community outbreak. We don’t want our country to run into situations like those in Europe. I know of several Chinese churches, some even smaller size than ours, have congregants or affiliates who are infected or in the process of being tested. Also be mindful of social distancing and personal hygiene. We need to take precautions and be prepared. But do not panic by hoarding excessive goods or food like people of this world.

At this crucial moment, it is a time of test for our faith and stewardship. Even though there is no Sunday corporate worship at this time, CM and EM worship service will be recorded and uploaded to Vimeo. We encourage all of us to be discipline and unite in worship at the same time even though we are apart. Please also set aside time to have moments of solitude and meditation as our pace may slow down. Also practice a lifestyle of worship as we know worship is not just on Sunday within a certain time frame. Though we are not gathering for worship or even as small groups, we can still live our body life. The church is not a building but God’s people. It is important that we don’t fight this battle alone. We may be isolated but not disconnected as a community. So let us be connected with one another through creative means. In the coming days, a Zoom account will be set up so that small groups can stay connected with one another online. At this point, church office will still be open until further notice. We have cancelled all regular events related to our community service and all non-essential gatherings in April are cancelled as well. If there is no absolute necessity, please try to keep social distancing and be advised not to gather at church in groups.

Let us all pray unceasingly for this crisis situation all over the world. Pray for God’s mercy and healing upon us. Pray for those who are suffering and going through trials of various sorts. Remember those who are in high risk professions. Perhaps there are some we know who need special grace. Pray for us pastoral and office staffs who need to adjust to all these upcoming changes for our worship and small groups. It is stressful and challenging when we encounter all these uncertainties. Yet it’s joyful and grateful for His grace is always enough. May all things work for the good of those who love Him. And may God’s name be glorified no matter under what situations.

(Psalms 29:10-11) The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people; the lord blesses his people with peace.
